James Pimm

1823 — Origins & Oysters

London's dandiest city gents loved to partake in oysters and gin. But with its bitter tang, gin was knocked back, not savoured. Enter shellfish-monger James Pimm and his famous central London 'Oyster Bar' in 1823. Patrons soon swallowed oysters with the PIMM'S 'house cup'. Flavoured with liqueurs and fruit extract, this more palatable long drink 'gin-sling' kick-started the great British PIMM'S story.

Pimm’s bottles

1851 — Six Sense

Clever old James Pimm. By 1851 he had already dreamt up two more recipes of the sip-able sensation PIMM'S No.1 Cup. The city clientele found No.2 (scotch) and No.3 (brandy) simply delectable and the range eventually grew to six different Cups.

Pimm’s No. 1 Cup advert - 1851

1851 — Cups and Caps

Jolly good news travels fast! By 1851 the PIMM'S name had spread, and West End 'gentleman's clubs' were stocking up. Fine British fellows about town traded their tankards for the iconic PIMM'S 'cup'. In 1946 the makers of PIMM'S traded traditional for modern and corks were replaced with fashionable screw caps.

1887 — Mixing PIMM'S and Politics

Sir Horatio Davies. Impressively British, wot? He was no less than an MP and Lord Mayor of London when he became the new owner of PIMM'S, expanding the 'Oyster Bar' concept to five PIMM'S spirit restaurants. And so PIMM'S became a city institution, set to command loyalty for decades to come.

Pimm’s No. 1 Cup advert - 1914

1914 — Trade and the British Empire

PIMM'S ahoy! From the shores of Sri Lanka to the officer's mess in Khartoum, Sudan, it was soon PIMM'S O'Clock right across the British Empire. Popularity soared during the Great War as the forces found it the perfect recipe for keeping chaps chipper and retailers stocked up to satisfy this long drink demand at home.

Pimm’s advert - 1960s

1914 — Building up a Thirst

Smashing success led to marketing mayhem and PIMM'S soon became renowned for its wealth of witty ads. They evoked the very best in British humour with celebrated one-liners like 'We had to let the west wing go, but thank heavens we can still afford our PIMM'S'. Today the 'PIMM'S o'clock' line coaxes many a group of chums to have a jolly entertaining time, especially in summer.

1969 — And on to the noughties

Ah, the swinging sixties, man was on the moon and PIMM'S was orbiting new ventures. Two new drink recipes were added to the PIMM'S repertoire — rye based No.5 and PIMM'S Vodka Cup (No.6).

By the early 90s, fans could quaff ready to drink PIMM'S & Lemonade from cans at barbecues (BBQ) and PIMM'S on tap was soon available at outdoor summer events.

And now with PIMM'S WINTER, PIMM'S can be enjoyed all year round. Cold, wet, dark? MARVELLOUS!
